Sicilly Sutherland’s Famous Chocolate Orange Cake

This gorgeous cake is the perfect end to a great meal, or just as a sneaky snack! Perfect by itself, or why not be adventurous and try it warm with a scoop of your favourite ice cream.


What is Sicilly Sutherland’s Famous Chocolate Orange Cake?

This gorgeous cake consists of a light and fluffy sponge flavoured using our Natural Flavoured Chocolate Orange Cocoa Powder, sandwiched by a zesty homemade orange curd.

For the Cake:

50g Sugar and Crumbs Chocolate Orange Cocoa Powder
200ml Boiling Water
175g Plain Flour
1/4 tsp Baking Powder
1 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda
100g Butter
250g Caster Sugar
2 Eggs

Orange Curd:

½ cup Sugar
2/3 cup Orange Juice
½ tsp Zest
4 Egg Yolks
5 tbsp Cubed Butter

Preheat oven to 150c / Gas Mark 2/ 300F


To make the Cake:

  1. Preheat the oven to 150°C(fan)
  2. Mix the cocoa powder with boiling water and leave to cool
  3. In a separate bowl, beat butter and sugar together
  4. Add all dry ingredients and mix
  5. Add eggs one at a time till all combined
  6. Add cocoa water and mix (this is a loose mixture so don’t be concerned)
  7. Bake in 8″ tin for 1 hour

To make the Orange Curd:

  1. Mix yolks with sugar
  2. Place on a low heat on the hob
  3. Stir in orange juice, zest, and butter one cube at a time
  4. Stir constantly until the mixture reaches the consistency of custard
  5. Sieve the mixture and store to go cold
  6. This can last 2 weeks if stored correctly in the fridge

To Finish:

  1. Take out of the oven and leave to cool for one hour
  2. To decorate, layer the orange curd between the sponge and serve
