What is a Gingerbread House?

Ingredients 

For the Gingerbread

600g Plain Flour
250g Unsalted Butter
150g Dark Muscovado Sugar
50g Gingerbread Sugar and Crumbs Natural Flavoured Icing Sugar
7tbsp Golden Syrup
2tsp Bicarbonate of Soda
4tsp Ground Ginger
 
For the ‘Glue’
 
100g Whipping It Up! (Any Flavour)
30ml Water 
 
 
For Decorating (Optional)
 
Callebaut Chocolate (Optional)
Sweets (Optional)
Sprinkles (Optional)
 
Instructions
 
1. Preheat the oven to 180c Gas mark 4, 350F, lightly grease and line 3 x baking trays.

2. Mix flour, bicarbonate of soda, and ginger into a mixing bowl. 

3. Melt the sugars, butter, and syrup in a saucepan.

4. Once melted, pour the contents directly into your dry ingredients. Mix until blended, and the dough is combined.

5. (OPTIONAL) If the dough doesn’t quite bind together, add water gradually – a teaspoon at a time.

6. Divide the mixture into 3. You will require 6 panels (2x Roof, 2x Side, 1x Back, 1x Front).

7. Roll dough directly onto a baking sheet until it’s about 5cm in thickness.

8. Cut out panels from the template (see below).

9. Use any excess to make gingerbread men, stars, trees, etc.

10. Bake for 12 minutes, or until golden brown. 

11. As soon as it comes out of the oven, use the template to check the gingerbread hasn’t expanded too much. Trim off any excess whilst it’s still hot.

12. Make royal Icing: gradually add water to Whipping It Up!, until it’s a thick paste. Place in a piping bag.

13. Use the royal icing to glue the panels together at the edges. Do NOT put the roof on until the front and sides are completely set.

14. Once all panels are glued together and set, DECORATE to your heart’s content 🙂
