Easter Meringue Chicks

These Easter Chicks are great fun to make with the kids, you can make them as big or small as you like, decorate them to give them their own little characters.

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 140c/120fan/gas mark 4, line a large baking tray with baking paper

In a mixing bowl add the egg whites and whisk until stiff, it is easier if you use a handheld electric whisk or a whisk attachment on your stand mixer

Add in half the icing sugar and whisk again for 1 minute, then add the remaining icing sugar with a blob of food colouring

Keep mixing until shiny and you can lift the whisk without the mixture falling off

Cut about 2cm of the bottom of a piping bag and then add the egg white mixture to the bag, pipe on to the baking paper by pushing down so you get a wider base and then lift to make a head, pipe until you have used all the mix being careful to leave space between each one for cooking

Place in the oven and bake for 30 mins or until they are crispy and can be lifted from the paper

Leave to cool on a cooling rack or on the tray for 15 mins

Decorate by doing two dots for the eyes in black or brown

Two lines for the legs and three little lines for feet at the end

For the beak use a orange or yellow pen to make a triangle shape

Use red to do a bow or blue for a tie

PS - Hold the meringue lightly as it will crack if held tight
